The art of designing interior spaces, remotely

Yes, you read that right! Like many other professions, interior designing too can be done from the comfort of your office, either as a virtual design consultant or a full-fledged interior designer. Through this blog, I will take you through my journey of working remotely as an interior designer, and virtually transforming spaces not only in India, but overseas as well.

When our world was hit by the pandemic, professionals across the globe were forced to work from home. As a passionate interior designer, who has always been physically present at all my work sites, I wondered how I will continue to run my business. However, as soon as an opportunity knocked, I grabbed it with both hands and since then there has been no looking back. While working remotely, I have understood that a successful project requires utmost trust between the designer and client, followed by effective communication, whether in the form of emails, video or voice call. As a designer working remotely, you must ask the client their preferred mode of communication and proceed accordingly.

The other important aspects to keep in mind while starting an interior designing project, remotely are:

1.  Fix a time with the client for discussions (always keep in mind the time difference in case of overseas clients).
2.  Every virtual meeting must be followed by an email enlisting the minutes, to avoid any loopholes or misunderstandings.
3.  Like all other offline projects, understand the clients’ vision for his space, colour choices, flooring, lighting, etc.
4.  Plan a thorough budget and clearly understand the clients design expectations.
5.  Get a list of local vendors from the clients from whom accessories can be sourced.

As an interior designer, you must also request your clients to share accurate measurements and AutoCAD designs for the space. This will facilitate in creating precise and detailed 3D renders, leaving no room for error.
