Essential Tips for Designing Your Perfect Home Bar

When I ask clients about their requirements during the design process, the home bar is always high priority particularly with the male folk – no compromises when it comes to the home bar. Designing a home bar involves several key considerations to create a stylish and functional space. Here are five important points to think about during planning stage:

  • Find the right location – choosing the right spot depends on one’s lifestyle and circumstances. The home bar should be accessible and location should be mutually decided by the household. Ideally, it is placed near the dining living area. Other popular areas include outdoor patios and the home theatre. Let it be known that I have been requested to provide bars in master bedrooms away from the sight of seniors and even home offices.

  • The style quotient – the design of the bar should compliment the overall style of your  home for a cohesive look – be it industrial, classic, modern or rustic. Adding decor pieces that reflect you will Personalise the space.  The overall look of the bar can be elevated further with the right choice of materials and finishes – these can include metal, glass, wood and stone. Hardware such as hinges and channels should be the best you can afford as they will give your bar longevity.

  • Storage and Organization – your main bottles should be within quick and easy reach. Everything should have a place it can return to. This will include bar tools, glasses, napkins, mixers and more bottles – alcoholic and non-alcoholic. A combination of shelves, drawers and cabinets will provide the ideal storage solution. And if you have the space, consider other practical equipment such as an ice maker, a small sink and fridge.

  • Lighting – creating an inviting atmosphere will come from your choice of light fixtures. Task lighting can include spots and pendants while downlighters can be used for more general lighting. Profile strips can be used to highlight shelves and add a touch of elegance.

  • Comfort – there should be sufficient space for circulation between the bar counter and back storage – 31 to 37”. And the ideal height for the counter should be around 42’ – this should be comfortable for both seated and standing guests. Bar stools should have a back for good support and a foot rest if not aready available on the front of the counter.

A home bar is a gathering place for guests whilst a successful home bar will tell a story and evoke a sense of personality. By reflecting on these points, you can design a home bar that is both practical and stylish, enhancing your entertaining space and making it a focal point of your home. Cheers to that!
