Current Trends To Show Off This Season

The Explorer trend has been edging its way into the interior designing and decoration scene for some time but it is now that it is currently grabbing a lot of attention.pixers43_42172365_-820x1024 As the name suggests, it’s is all about global travel which of course incorporates the more obvious maps and globes in their many forms. But this trend has evolved to include items such as scientific instruments, bell jars and terrariums, as well as botanical influences, giving the look much more of a Christopher Columbus.Terrarium Wedding Centerpiece, Terrarium Centerpiece, wedding centerpiece The colours in this trend are quite muted, with beiges, creams and browns predominant. I, as an interior decorator, believe that black is also a key colour and gives it a much more modern feel.

An extension of this trend that has the same vibe is the library look – reminiscent of a men’s club and works particularly well in sitting rooms, offices and of course libraries! old_library_design_interior_design_home_library_11139_1600x1200

They’re everywhere from knitted pouffes, chairs, sofas and stools to the obvious knitted chunky cushions and throws.7881871144_0479b36508_o

There are even knitted ceramics with the classic cable pattern. How novel indeed!

Velvets are also very popular at this time of the year. This sumptuous fabric is ideal for adding a touch of old fashioned luxury and glamour to your home. inky-velvet-hag-28oct13-pr_b

Choose jewel like tones of peacock blue, turquoise green and rich purples for a modern look, and layer them up with luxurious silks.

There are some beautiful new tartan fabrics too – stylish wool tartans with stripe and a textured plain that work perfectly well together along with the plaids.wooolarmchair_2701541b

A staple of winter, faux fur is usually incorporated as either a rug or throw, but more recently we’re seeing it draped over hard backed chairs in the kitchen and study.FaveFurThrowElleDecor2006Jan

Because of its luxurious appearance, fur is often viewed as a statement feature in the home so think about how it will fit in your home and choose the size and colours accordingly.
